What does it mean to nurture citizens? Peiying Primary School, nestled here in Yishun, offers a compelling answer. This school, formerly known as Poi Eng Public School, has a history deeply intertwined with the community’s growth. Peiying’s roots stretch back to 1919. Philanthropist Lim Nee Soon established Fa Chu School along Jalan Ulu Seletar. This school eventually became Zang Hua School in Kangkar. In 1941, Zang Hua School merged with Qi Zhi School. They formed Poi Eng Public School on Upper Thomson Road, beside the former Seletar Institute. Supported by the local community, Poi Eng provided education for the Chinese children of Nee Soon. A significant change came in 1987. Poi Eng Public School relocated to Yishun Ring Road and became Peiying Primary School, a government school. The name “Peiying,” meaning “to nurture citizens for nation building,” reflects the school’s commitment. While the new building on Yishun Ring Road was under construction, classes were held at Chongfu Primary School for nine months. The new $4.69 million building opened in 1988, complete with 36 classrooms, specialized rooms like music, art, and computer labs, and even a dental clinic. The unique lantern-shaped roof of the combined canteen and hall brought natural light into the space. The school grounds also included basketball courts, a carpark that doubled as an assembly area, and a shared field with the neighboring secondary school. In 1998, an Adventure Tower was installed, emphasizing outdoor adventure learning. Peiying continued to evolve. From 2001 to 2003, the school underwent PRIME upgrading, adding a new block of classrooms. More recently, in 2018, the PERI upgrading project culminated in a new Indoor Sports Hall. Peiying Primary School has witnessed many changes, but its core mission remains: to nurture and prepare citizens for a bright future.
