Did you know that the Fort de Domont once housed 600 prisoners? It is a formidable structure. Today we explore its history.
The Fort de Domont was built between 1874 and 1878. Its purpose was to protect Paris. It is one of the most powerful fortified camps around the city.
The construction of the Fort de Domont began on July 14, 1874. Most of the materials came from the Montmorency forest. The industrial railway of the Champeaux brickyards helped a lot.
Commander Decoux oversaw the construction. Captain Delanne and Lieutenant Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre assisted him. Joffre later became Marshal of France in 1916.
The Fort de Domont was designed to house 1175 men. It had to block the Beaumont railway. It also kept watch over the plains of France.
The fort’s artillery could support nearby Fort de Montmorency and Fort de Montlignon. The Fort de Domont had a pentagonal shape. The entrance faced south toward Paris. It featured a double caponier and two flanking caponiers. A 155mm Mougin turret was added in 1884. Other artillery included 120mm and 95mm caliber guns.
In an interesting turn of events, the fort’s turret rotation system played a role in the Dreyfus affair. Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly accused. He was convicted of giving the turret plans to the Germans in 1894.
During World War I, the Fort de Domont fired on German scout parties. This happened in the vicinity of Luzarches in September 1914. It was the only Parisian fortification to fire on Germans.
The Germans occupied the Fort de Domont in 1940 during World War II. Before leaving in August 1944, they destroyed the ammunition.
After 1947, the fort was demilitarized. The French Post used it as a research station. They studied the atmosphere’s ionospheric layers. This research focused on long-distance radio communication.
Since 1964, the Office National des Forêts has managed the fort. For a while, a private company used it for radiography work. In 1993, it became a training center for fire services.
Today, it is known as the Fort Domont Training Center. It provides comprehensive training. This includes live fire exercises.
The Fort de Domont is an exceptional historical site. Its polygonal layout is clear. The Mougin turret still has its rotation mechanism. This fort is one of the most remarkable in the Île-de-France region. The Fort de Domont stands as a silent witness to conflicts. It is now a place of learning and preparation for the fire services.
