Hidden within Karlsruhe’s embrace lies the Bremengrund. It’s a sanctuary teeming with life, a testament to nature’s resilience. Bremengrund is a nature reserve, a protected area where the Rhine River once flowed freely. Imagine the scene in 1968. The discovery of a large grey heron colony nesting on this isolated island sparked a call for its protection. The Bremengrund was under threat. The local community saw it as a source of gravel. The waterways authority envisioned a dam. A highway was planned to cross the Rhine right here. This beautiful haven was caught in a tug-of-war. The fight for Bremengrund’s survival spanned almost two decades. Twice, the area was temporarily protected. Yet, efforts to declare it a nature reserve were thwarted. The opposition was fierce, with local and regional plans clashing. Even the hunting, fishing, and canoeing associations voiced their concerns. Finally, in 1986, after a third attempt, victory was achieved. The Bremengrund became a protected nature reserve. Today, the Bremengrund thrives. It’s a mosaic of floodplain forest, old Rhine arms, and waterways. It’s a place where diverse vegetation and a rich array of wildlife flourish. If you cycle along the Rhine Cycle Route today, you’ll pass right by Bremengrund. Take a detour. Walk the Bremengrundweg, a path that leads across the old Rhine. Venture through ancient woodlands and alongside tranquil waterways. Witness the vibrant ecosystem that was almost lost. The Bremengrund stands as a reminder of the power of persistence and the importance of protecting our natural heritage.
