Slipping through the rugged terrain of Hawke’s Bay, Stoney Creek carves its path. Stoney Creek is part of a larger network of waterways that feed into the Mohaka River. Imagine standing here, at the edge of the Stoney Creek Conservation Area. This area, along with the neighboring Tarawera Conservation Area, offers a glimpse into New Zealand’s wild heart. The area is known for its steep, fast-flowing streams, like Stoney Creek, that descend from the Ahimanawa Range. The terrain isn’t easy. It’s a challenge for even the most experienced hikers. Access to Stoney Creek is via Takarere Road, off State Highway 5. Be prepared, parts of Takarere Road are suitable only for 4WD vehicles. The landscape around Stoney Creek is dominated by beech forests. You’ll find impressive stands of podocarps like rimu, kahikatea, matai, and miro at lower levels. The understory is dense with plants like pepperwood. Stoney Creek Conservation Area is a haven for hunters. Red and sika deer roam the area throughout the year. Hunting is particularly popular during the spring and the roar. You might also encounter feral pigs along the margins of the conservation area. If you’re planning to hunt with dogs at Stoney Creek, remember there are special rules. Only one hunting dog per hunter is allowed. Dogs must be avian avoidance certified. Remember to bring your certificate along with your hunting permit. If you plan to use more than one dog, you’ll need a separate permit from the Ahuriri/Napier DOC office. Stoney Creek Conservation Area is a truly wild and rugged piece of New Zealand. It offers a unique experience for those seeking adventure and a connection with nature. Be prepared for challenging terrain and remember to respect the environment.
