Was this imposing fortress always a museum? No. The Homeland War Museum, perched atop Srđ Hill within the walls of Fort Imperial, stands as a testament to Dubrovnik’s resilience. While the fort itself dates back to 1812, constructed by the French and dedicated to Napoleon I, it was during the brutal siege of 1991 that Fort Imperial took on a new significance. As Serbian-Montenegrin forces surrounded the city, this fort became the frontline of Dubrovnik’s defense, a beacon of hope amidst the shelling. It served as the command headquarters for the Croatian Army’s 163rd Dubrovnik Brigade, their bravery echoing within these very walls. In 2008, the fort transitioned from a symbol of defiance to a sanctuary of remembrance. The Homeland War Museum was inaugurated, showcasing the struggle and triumph of Dubrovnik in the face of adversity. Inside, you’ll find poignant exhibits: photographs, weapons, documents, and personal stories that bring the conflict to life. The Homeland War Museum doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of war, but it also highlights the indomitable spirit of the people who lived through it.
