“Sampai disini Tuhan menolong kita.” These words echo through the history of Gereja Eben in Jakarta. This is not just a church. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and community.
Gereja Eben stands as a beacon of hope. It represents a place where faith has flourished since the fight for independence. The story of Gereja Eben begins in 1945. Indonesia was in the throes of revolution. Amidst this turmoil, a group of Christians in Kramat, Central Jakarta, sought solace and unity.
They started as “Jemaat Masohi” shortly after Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1945. Their community grew. On May 1, 1946, the Gereja Protestan Indonesia officially recognized them. They were given a new name: “Jemaat Eben Haezer.”
The name “Eben Haezer” itself is deeply meaningful. It comes from 1 Samuel 7:12. Samuel erected a stone between Mizpah and Yesana. He named it Eben-Haezer. He proclaimed, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” This name reflected the congregation’s belief. They believed in God’s unwavering support through trials.
Initially, Jemaat Eben Haezer was part of the GPI. The GPI encompassed churches in the western part of Indonesia. In 1948, these churches merged. They formed the Gereja Protestan di Indonesia bagian Barat or GPIB.
Gereja Eben Haezer became integrated into the GPIB on April 29, 1956. It was renamed “GPIB Jemaat Eben Haezer.” This integration marked a significant milestone. On that same day, the congregation inaugurated their first permanent church building. Before that, they had been worshiping in a former coal warehouse. Imagine the transformation. From a place of darkness to a sanctuary of light.
As the community expanded, so did their needs. On April 29, 1984, a new two-story church building was inaugurated. This was made possible by the GPIB Synod Assembly and the Jakarta Regional Government. The new building featured a worship space on the first floor. Offices and multipurpose rooms occupied the second floor.
Gereja Eben has undergone several transformations throughout the years. It started from 1945 to 1948. Later came the years 1948-1956, 1956-1984, 1984-2018 and 2018-now. Each phase reflects the evolving needs and growth of the congregation.
Today, Gereja Eben stands as a symbol. It is a symbol of faith, perseverance, and community spirit. It is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the enduring power of belief. It reminds us that even in the most challenging times, divine help is always within reach.
