You see it, right there, the Lincolnwood Public Library. It may look like a simple brick building, but let me tell you, it’s got a story. It’s been a beacon of knowledge and community for decades.

The library was established in 1978, a bit later than you’d expect for such a vibrant suburb. But it wasn’t always called Lincolnwood. This area was originally settled by the Potawatomi. They lived here for centuries, but the Treaty of St. Louis in 1816 forced them to move west.

European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. The area became known as Tessville, named after a German immigrant, Johann Tess, who bought 30 acres of barren land. Tessville started to grow, but it really took off when the Chicago & North Western Railway arrived in the late 19th century. Soon, saloons and taverns popped up everywhere.

In 1931, the village’s longest-serving mayor, Henry A. Proesel, changed the name to Lincolnwood. He liked the sound of it, and the elm trees planted during the Great Depression added to the charm. Even today, these trees line the streets, giving the village a unique character.

Lincolnwood Public Library sits on West Pratt Avenue. Inside, you’ll find a library of things – it’s not what you think. It’s a collection of tools and equipment available to borrow. Ever wanted to try your hand at photography? There’s a camera for you. Want to fix your bike? They’ve got the tools. The library has something for everyone. It’s a reminder that knowledge comes in many forms. And even though it’s just a short drive from Chicago, it feels like a world of its own.
