“Fashionable real-estate.” That’s how some described Rue des Monceaux. It was the late 19th century. Rue des Monceaux, nestled in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, was the place to be. Grand hotels lined the street, housing notable families like the Rothschilds. My family lived on Rue des Monceaux, in the heart of “salon-country”. Just a short distance away, Madame de Saint-Marceaux held her renowned Friday salons. These gatherings attracted the who’s who of Parisian society. Everyone, it seemed, wanted their address on Rue des Monceaux. Only those of high social standing could afford it. Rue des Monceaux was more than just a fashionable address. It held a certain magic, a sense of history and prestige. The architecture of the Second Empire hotels was breathtaking. The Rothschilds, with their immense wealth and influence, added to the street’s allure. The constant buzz of activity, from elegant carriages to the whispers of socialites, created a unique atmosphere. One particular spring day, Rue des Monceaux played a role in a memorable encounter. A young American girl, Elizabeth Drewry, was staying across the Seine. I was tasked with bringing her to meet my mother. This seemingly simple errand turned into an adventure, highlighting the captivating charm of Rue des Monceaux and its surroundings. Our journey began on Rue des Monceaux, then took us across Paris. We eventually returned to Rue des Monceaux and my family home, several hours later than expected. The day, filled with unexpected detours and the American girl’s infectious enthusiasm, was a reminder of the vibrant life that flowed through Rue des Monceaux and all of Paris.
