Jonathan Riley, a Kentucky native, journeyed to Texas with his family around 1856. He received a grant for this land in 1863, marking the beginning of his family’s legacy in Tarrant County. Local lore whispers that the cemetery’s origins are rather grim. It’s said that after a thief was killed nearby, Mr. Riley, a man of faith, offered a portion of his land for a proper burial. Over time, the site evolved into a resting place for Riley’s family and neighbors, a community bound by life, loss, and the vast Texas sky above. In 1883, the cemetery gained official recognition when Thomas Riley and William Autry dedicated a one-acre plot for this solemn purpose. The passage of time, however, can be unforgiving. While the Riley Cemetery Plaque stands as a reminder of those laid to rest here, the physical markers of their presence have long since vanished. No headstones remain, only the faint outlines of graves barely visible beneath the earth.
