Did General de Larminat ever imagine a street named after him? Here we stand, on Rue du Général de Larminat in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. This street, once a simple square near the Champ de Mars, now bears the name of a remarkable man. Rue du Général de Larminat is a rather unique street. It’s a T-shaped road, a rarity in Paris. Its location is significant, close to where the Association des Français Libres, an organization of Free French fighters during World War II, once had its headquarters. General de Larminat was the president of this association. He was one of the first to join the Free French forces under Charles de Gaulle. He had a distinguished military career, spanning both World Wars. He fought bravely at Verdun, earning several citations for his courage. In World War II, he played a pivotal role in rallying French Equatorial Africa to the Free French cause. He even governed the region and served as High Commissioner for Free French Africa. He also organized African battalions for the Free French forces, contributing significantly to the war effort. Later, he commanded troops during the Tunisian campaign and played a role in the liberation of France. After the war, he became Inspector General of the colonial troops. He was implicated in the “Plan Bleu” affair but later cleared. He tragically took his own life in 1962. Rue du Général de Larminat stands as a testament to his service and his commitment to France. It’s a quiet residential street now. But the echoes of history resonate here, reminding us of the bravery and dedication of General de Larminat and the Free French. As you walk this street, consider the weight of history it carries, the sacrifices made, and the legacy of a general who helped shape the destiny of France.
