Three lives lost. A deafening roar. That’s the legacy of the Törökbálinti fireworks warehouse explosion. Right here on this site in 2004 a catastrophe unfolded. A seemingly ordinary afternoon turned into a scene of devastation. The Törökbálinti petárdaraktár-robbanás remains one of Hungary’s most significant industrial accidents.

The explosion wasn’t just a tragic accident. It was a consequence of negligence. The Pyro-Technic Kft company operated the warehouse. They repeatedly violated regulations. They made unauthorized alterations to the building. They stored 50 tons of fireworks. These were far beyond what the structure could safely handle. The authorities had issued fines in 2003 and 2004. They had also deemed the building unsafe. Still the fireworks remained.

The explosion at 4:58 PM on August 5th 2004 shook the entire region. The impact was tremendous. Debris rained down seven kilometers away. Seismographs seven kilometers away registered the blast. The initial explosion was followed by many smaller detonations. The fire raged for hours. Six nearby houses caught fire. The dry vegetation also ignited quickly. The air pressure shattered countless windows in surrounding buildings. Several vacation homes and parked cars were destroyed.

Emergency services responded swiftly. They extinguished smaller fires in the vicinity. Civil defense evacuated residents from nearby streets. Firefighters however could only start fighting the warehouse fire after several hours. The initial blast created a huge crater in the ground. Experts estimated that 10 to 100 kg of black powder exploded. Some estimates put the number as high as 230 kg.

Investigations followed. They uncovered numerous safety violations. The company stored illegal fireworks. There were also suggestions of sabotage. The company management denied the accusations. They claimed the explosion was an act of sabotage. They pointed to the type of crater in the concrete. They noted the outward breaking of windows. This suggested TNT not black powder was used. There were also unexplained blood and scrape marks on containers at the site. This raised suspicions of a struggle before the explosion.

The ensuing legal battles lasted years. Törökbálinti’s local government and residents sued Pyro-Technic Kft for damages. The company initially refused responsibility claiming sabotage. The court however found Pyro-Technic Kft liable. In 2012 the court awarded 15 million forints in damages. The criminal investigation ended in 2005. Charges against four company executives were dropped in 2011. The Törökbálinti petárdaraktár-robbanás remains shrouded in mystery. The question of negligence versus sabotage remains unanswered. The site now stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of recklessness.
