Have you ever felt the pulse of a neighborhood steeped in history? Kalihi in Honolulu is more than just a place it’s a living tapestry woven from generations of stories. Kalihi meaning “the edge” in Hawaiian perfectly captures its position nestled between bustling Honolulu and quieter residential areas.
Right here you stand where the Kalihi Stream carved its path creating Kalihi Valley. Its upper reaches are narrow and steep. As the stream approaches Honolulu Harbor it widens into flatlands. The lower valley has been a residential area for many years. It’s home to numerous older houses. Closer to the water it transitions into a commercial and maritime zone.
This area played an important role in Oahu’s history. Kalihi Kai once housed a Leprosy Receiving Station. People suspected of having leprosy were examined there. Those diagnosed were then sent to Kalaupapa on Molokai for treatment. Before the land was developed the area was known for its thriving fishponds. These included the ‘Apili Pahouiki Pahounui ‘Auiki and Ananoho ponds. These fishponds were situated near today’s Sand Island Access Road. Sadly they have all been filled in. Captain Alexander Adams the harbormaster of Kamehameha I even had a home near the ‘Apili pond.
But Kalihi’s history stretches far beyond its recent past. Legend says Kalihi was home to Pele’s family including her sister mother and the wife of Wakea. This adds a mystical layer to the neighborhood’s rich heritage.
Today Kalihi remains a vibrant community. The Oahu Community Correctional Center a short-term jail stands on a sixteen-acre plot here. The area is also served by numerous public schools. These include Kalihi Elementary Kalihi Waena Elementary Kalihi Uka Elementary and Kalihi Kai Elementary schools. Dole Middle School Kapalama Elementary School King David Kalakaua Middle School and Farrington High School are also in the neighborhood. Damien Memorial School a private school is located here too. The Kamehameha Schools campus and the Bernice P Bishop Museum sit at the southern edge.
