Suddenly before you, the Palácio Ludovice stands as a testament to Lisbon’s rich history. It whispers tales of architects, kings, and transformations. Prepare to step back in time and explore the story of this remarkable building.

Palácio Ludovice began as the private residence of João Frederico Ludovice. He was the architect to King João V in the early 1700s. Ludovice sought the perfect location to bring the king’s architectural desires to life. He found this very spot.

João Frederico Ludovice designed a five-story facade. The Palácio Ludovice featured unequal heights and dimensions. Balconies offered stunning views of Lisbon. White-and-blue tiled walls showcased 18th-century artistry. A chapel included Masonic symbols and a Hebraic inscription. Palatial rooms boasted stucco ceilings and a majestic staircase. Remarkably the Palácio Ludovice was the first of its kind. It occupied an entire block.

After Ludovice’s time the building became the headquarters of the police. Later it housed the Port Wine Institute. This history greatly impacted the current design concept. The Palácio Ludovice features beautiful carpets inspired by the Douro vineyards.

More recently the Palácio Ludovice underwent a complete transformation. It became a luxurious boutique hotel with 61 rooms and suites. Renowned Portuguese architect Miguel Câncio Martins led the renovation. He is known for projects like Buddha Bar in Paris.

Martins preserved the original 18th-century tiles. He also took care of the fresco paintings and stucco ceilings. He created a palatial accommodation. This marked a new era for this historical landmark.
