Has anyone ever heard of a church with a billiard hall? Queen Street Baptist Church in Erith was just that! Founded in 1875, this church was far from ordinary. The first structure, built in 1877, couldn’t contain its rapidly growing congregation. A new chapel, erected in 1897, replaced it, while the original building became a school hall. Queen Street Baptist Church truly cared for its community, which at one point represented 12 different nationalities. They even had sports teams! To support their football, tennis, and cricket teams, the church purchased additional land. This land accommodated tennis courts, a billiard hall, and meeting rooms. Sadly, the council’s redevelopment plans in the 1960s led to the compulsory purchase of much of the church grounds. This left Queen Street Baptist Church with its current premises. However, its spirit of community and faith remained strong. The church continues to thrive, with a growing congregation and a dedicated team of deacons. Queen Street Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
