Gazing upon Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang, it’s hard to imagine the tumultuous history that unfolded here. This mosque, officially known as Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang, stands as a testament to the resilience of faith and community. It was inaugurated in 2008 by the Yang di-Pertuan Negeri, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas. The current structure replaced the old Masjid Bahru Sungai Pinang. Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang shares a captivating narrative with its nearby sibling, Masjid Maqbul. Their story intertwines with the teachings of a revered religious guru, Abdul Ghani of Madura, also known as Tuan Guru. He laid the foundation for both mosques, which served as spiritual havens for Malay and Acehnese traders navigating the Sungai Pinang river on their sampans and perahus. However, during the 1860s, a rift divided the congregation. They aligned with two secret societies, the Bendera Merah and Bendera Putih. Each was affiliated with Chinese secret societies. This discord escalated into open street fights, known as the Penang Riots of 1867. The dissenting faction established Masjid Bahru. From that point, Masjid Maqbul was also known as Masjid Lama. Today, Masjid Bahru has become the Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang you see before you. It stands within walking distance of the smaller, restored Masjid Maqbul. Their shared history serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of faith, even amidst conflict. Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang stands tall, a symbol of unity and spiritual renewal.
