Did you hear the wind that night? The Emlékfa 2006. augusztus 20. Stele stands here. It is a reminder of a tragic day in Budapest. The memorial marks the 2006 fireworks disaster. A sudden storm hit the city. Five people died and hundreds were injured.

The Emlékfa 2006. augusztus 20. Stele commemorates this event. It is located on Bem Quay. This is where a tree fell during the storm. The falling tree killed two people.

The storm struck on August 20 2006. It was a Sunday evening. The storm hit around nine pm. This was exactly when the fireworks began. About 1.5 million people gathered to watch.

A sudden orkan wind swept through the city. Winds reached 80-100 kilometers per hour. Heavy rain followed. Many people tried to go home. Panic spread. The celebration turned into a catastrophe. Witnesses described a “world’s end atmosphere”. Streetlights were turned off for the fireworks. Rain fell almost horizontally. Visibility was poor. Roof tiles and glass shards fell. Sirens wailed from damaged cars. Water rushed down from the Buda hills.

The fireworks continued despite the storm. There was a brief pause. But the show resumed as the wind and rain subsided. Later reports indicated a total of five deaths. Over three hundred people were injured. Two people died near a street vendor’s booth in Buda. A tree fell on them. One victim was a 12-year-old girl. The other was a man around 40. A 54-year-old woman sought shelter in a fast food restaurant. She suffered a fatal heart attack. Many watched the fireworks from boats on the Danube. One motorboat collided with another boat. Several people fell into the water. Some were rescued. But a married couple disappeared. Their bodies were found days later.

Several factors contributed to the tragedy. There were serious organizational failures. The event was not stopped in time. Unfortunate circumstances made things worse. The weather forecast was inaccurate. The storm arrived suddenly. Although predicted the warning was not specific enough. It did not reach the right people in time. An email was missed.

Panic and darkness added to the chaos. People rushed to leave. The darkness and rain made it hard to see. There was terrible overcrowding. No one informed or guided the panicked crowd. Escape routes were not marked. Police could not provide information. It was lucky no one was trampled to death. There were not enough ambulances. Only 12 ambulances were initially present. An additional 40 ambulances were sent. The ambulances struggled to reach the injured. Too many people tried to call for help at once. Mobile networks were overloaded. Dispatch centers could not handle the volume of calls. Over fifty people waited for help.

Several people could have stopped the fireworks. But information about the storm did not reach key officials. The Prime Minister’s Office and disaster management were unaware. Only the police knew. But they could not stop the event. Responsibility was immediately demanded. The fireworks organization was fragmented. Blame was shifted after the tragedy.

Officially no single person was held responsible. The ombudsman’s office blamed the Prime Minister’s Office. A government investigation identified failures. The disaster management supervisor was fired. A meteorologist received disciplinary action. They had not confirmed the warnings were received. The head of the Prime Minister’s Office department responsible for the event was also disciplined.

The disaster management supervisor was later cleared of wrongdoing. They were rehabilitated. State compensation for victims was delayed. It only occurred after 2010. The new government made it a priority. The Hungarian state paid out 250 million forints.

The Emlékfa 2006. augusztus 20. Stele stands as a reminder. A show should not endanger lives. The memorial was erected on August 17 2008. It is located where the fatal tree once stood. Many placed candles at the tree stump immediately after the tragedy.

Kő Boldizsár created the memorial. It features a broken tree. A pair of birds mourns their nest. A fairy face looks down on them. It symbolizes tragedy nature and human responsibility. The artist said “man was not only a victim but also responsible”.
