Did you ever hear of an estate funded by a silversmith? Tower Gardens Estate in North Tottenham has just such a story. It’s a place where history whispers through the curiously named streets and the unique architecture of each home. Originally known as the White Hart Lane Estate, Tower Gardens Estate was one of the first municipal “cottage estates” in the world, built between 1904 and 1928. It wouldn’t exist without the generosity of Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling, a prominent silversmith and watchmaker. He donated £10,000, a king’s ransom at the time, specifically to house Jewish workers from Tower Hamlets. This generous donation is also the reason for the name, Tower Gardens Estate, and for the dedicated public gardens within the estate. Tower Gardens Estate was a groundbreaking project. It was the London County Council’s first venture outside its own jurisdiction. The estate’s design is a fascinating blend of practicality and artistic flair. Imagine 954 houses spread across 24 streets, each street boasting its own distinct architectural style. The influence of the Garden City Movement is evident, although the layout isn’t a strict adherence to its principles. The homes, predominantly two-up, two-down with some three-bedroom houses and flats in Topham Square, are small but packed with character. The architecture is a testament to the Arts and Crafts movement, with W.E. Riley at the helm. Look closely, and you’ll see charming gables, impressive chimneys, and inviting porches. The variety is intentional. Terraces of just four houses were sometimes designed to resemble grand country mansions. The estate’s streets are named after historical figures, the “Lords of Tottenham,” who once owned the land. From Siward, Earl of Northumberland, to Thomas Smith in 1792, their names echo through the years. Tower Gardens Estate stands as a testament to a time of ambitious social housing projects, where architecture and community thrived.
