Hidden within the embrace of Manukau Harbour lies Kakamatua Inlet. It’s a place where the whispers of history mingle with the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. Kakamatua Inlet is more than just a picturesque bay. It’s a living testament to the resilience and spirit of the Te Kawerau ā Maki and other Tāmaki Māori. They returned to this area after the Musket Wars, seeking solace and a new beginning in 1836. The name itself, Kakamatua, echoes the memory of Te Mātūa and Te Kaka Whakaara, landmarks near Karekare that bore witness to conflict in 1825. Their story is etched into the very landscape of this inlet.

Kakamatua Inlet witnessed the industrious era of kauri logging in the 1860s. Mathew Roe, a New Zealand settler, established a sawmill at the mouth of the Kakamatua Stream. He harnessed the power of the river, building a dam to transport logs downstream to his mill. The hum of the sawmill filled the air until the 1870s, a testament to the changing times. The inlet also holds a somber connection to a maritime tragedy. The HMS Orpheus met its fate in the Manukau Harbour in 1863, claiming many lives. Some of the victims of this devastating shipwreck found their final resting place near Kakamatua Inlet, their stories forever intertwined with the tranquil waters.

Today, Kakamatua Inlet welcomes visitors with a different kind of energy. The Kakamatua Beach Walk offers a gentle pathway to the sandy shores, inviting leisurely strolls and the joyful sounds of dogs at play. A popular off-leash area, the inlet allows canine companions to frolic freely, their exuberance adding to the lively atmosphere. It’s a place where families gather, where laughter mingles with the calls of seabirds, and where the past and present converge in a harmonious embrace. Kakamatua Inlet is a place of quiet reflection and joyful celebration, a true gem nestled within the vibrant tapestry of Auckland’s natural beauty.
