“Kohuora” once echoed across this land. Now we stand in Middlemore. This suburb holds a history richer than you might imagine. Middlemore began as farmland in the 1840s. William Thorne Buckland and his brother Alfred transformed the area.

But where does the name Middlemore come from? It came from Richard Fairburn’s house. He was the son of Anglican missionary William Thomas Fairburn. The house is now part of the Auckland Golf Club.

Middlemore sits on the Waokauri or Pūkaki portage site. Canoes once traversed this land. They connected the Waitematā and Manukau harbours. This made Middlemore a vital link between waterways.

Today, Middlemore is known for Middlemore Hospital. It is also known for the Auckland Golf Club. King’s College sits near both landmarks.

Middlemore’s population was estimated at 30 in June 2024. This small suburb covers just 0.72 square kilometers. Despite its size, Middlemore plays a significant role in Auckland. It’s a place where history and modern life intertwine.

Middlemore Hospital stands as a crucial landmark. It began during World War II. The hospital was intended for sick and injured servicemen. Construction started in 1943. By 1945, the war ended and the hospital became civilian-run. The Auckland Hospital Board named it Middlemore Hospital in 1944. The name honored the Thompson family farm nearby.

Middlemore Hospital officially opened on May 3, 1947. It has grown into Auckland’s largest hospital. It serves over 91,000 inpatients yearly. More than 354,000 outpatients receive treatment here. The Emergency Department is the busiest in Australasia.

This hospital provides more than just emergency care. Middlemore offers tertiary and specialist care. It also offers various health and social services. The hospital’s reach spans from Ōtāhuhu to Port Waikato. The demand for Middlemore’s services keeps growing.

Middlemore Hospital includes several specialized units. The National Burn Centre opened in June 2006. It cares for the most severely burn-injured patients. The Edmund Hillary Block added 240 in-patient beds in 2009. The hospital also houses the Ko Awatea Centre. It focuses on innovative healthcare solutions.

Middlemore continues to evolve. It addresses the growing healthcare needs of Auckland. The suburb’s history began with farming. Now, Middlemore is a hub for health and community. It connects the past with the present. The name Middlemore signifies more than just a place. It represents a legacy of care and connection.
