Rond-Point Matoub Lounès stands as a testament to a life lived for music. It also honors his activism in the face of adversity. Lounès Matoub was more than just a singer. He was a poet a thinker and a revolutionary.

Born in Kabylia Algeria in 1956 Lounès built his first guitar at age nine. He used an empty car oil can. His music became a voice for the Berber cause human rights and secularism in Algeria.

His lyrics often challenged the status quo. He fearlessly criticized the Algerian government. This made him a target. Despite bans from Algerian radio and television Lounès remained popular. His music resonated deeply with the Kabylian people.

In 1988 Lounès was shot five times by a policeman. He survived but required years of surgeries. This brutal attack didn’t silence him. Instead it fueled his passion. He described his long recovery in his 1989 album L’Ironie du sort.

The civil war in Algeria brought further threats. The Armed Islamic Group added Lounès to their hit list. In 1994 he was abducted and condemned to death. Public outcry led to his release. Lounès continued to speak out for what he believed in.

Tragically on June 25 1998 Lounès Matoub’s car was ambushed. Masked gunmen opened fire killing him. His wife and sisters-in-law were wounded. News of his assassination sparked riots in Kabylia. People mourned the loss of their hero.

Lounès was buried in his native village between a fig tree and a cherry tree. His family played a parody of the Algerian national anthem. It was a final act of defiance from his last album. The GIA claimed responsibility for his death.

Two men were convicted in 2011 for Matoub’s killing. They were sentenced to 12 years in jail. However the trial was suspended twice due to the family insisting on their innocence. They were released in 2012 having served their time.

Lounès Matoub championed federalism secularism and freedom of speech. He advocated for Berber recognition. He dreamt of a decentralized education system in Algeria.
