“South Park Rocks!” It’s more than just a saying. It’s a vibrant message illuminated on the South Park Branch Library. Here at South Park Lights, art meets community spirit.

South Park Lights is a public art project. Seattle media artist Franklin Joyce created it in 2006. The artwork uses community-inspired illustrations. These images illuminate the western exterior wall. This striking display is on the new library.

The images change seasonally. They draw on the neighborhood’s history and Hispanic culture. You’ll find depictions of Cesar Chavez. Dia de los Muertos is also represented. The South Park Bridge shines brightly and River City Skate Park gets its due.

The phrase “South Park Rocks” is a tribute. It honors South Park’s resident musicians. Three theatrical lighting fixtures project the images. These are housed in artist-designed stainless steel enclosures. The enclosures are mounted on two 12-foot columns.

Libraries for All funded this public art. The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs managed it. Franklin Joyce calls South Park one of Seattle’s most spirited communities. He wanted artwork that would allow the community to represent itself. It needed to be consistent with the library’s vision.

The artist created eight displays. That’s two years’ worth of gobos. Gobos are thin metal plates. The artist’s designs are cut out of their surface. This allows the South Park Lights to remain relevant.

The inspiration came directly from South Park. The artwork needed to be inclusive. It needed to reflect the dynamic community. The location is perfect. It’s right at the South Park Branch Library. You will find it at 8604 Eighth Avenue South. It’s located at South Cloverdale Street.

Look closely. You will see how light transforms stories. The South Park Lights truly capture the heart of this Seattle neighborhood. They create a shared space, lit by art and community pride.
