Down in the depths of the London Canal Museum lie two remarkable Ice Wells. These aren’t just any wells. They’re Victorian-era marvels. Imagine a time before refrigeration. Ice was a precious commodity. A luxury. Essential for preserving food and even used to ease pain during surgeries.

Carlo Gatti a Swiss immigrant saw an opportunity. He imported ice from Norway. Imagine tons of ice arriving by ship and canal barge. It was then stored in these enormous brick-lined wells. Each well thirty feet across and forty-two feet deep.

Gatti’s ice wells weren’t just for the wealthy. They supplied ice to merchants selling meat fish and dairy products. Ordinary Londoners couldn’t afford ice. It was simply too expensive. Gatti became a millionaire supplying the city’s needs.

These wells operated until 1904. Then artificial refrigeration arrived. The ice trade collapsed. Gatti’s business became a horse and cart depot. The wells were forgotten. Buried beneath the city’s hustle.

Today one well is visible through an opening. It’s lit. You can peer into the past. The other well remains hidden. You can view it through a webcam. The Ice Wells are a unique glimpse into London’s history. They are a testament to ingenuity and the surprising value of ice in the Victorian era. A remarkable story of entrepreneurship and innovation preserved beneath the city. They remind us of a time when ice was more than just frozen water. It was a symbol of wealth a necessity and a hidden treasure.
