In 1123 the village of Heiligenrode first appeared in records. This was no ordinary village. Heiligenrode nestled near Kassel at the edge of the Kaufunger Wald. It was a planned settlement a Hufendorf. The church stood at its heart. The Kloster Kaufungen a powerful monastery oversaw its creation. They cleared the land and established Heiligenrode as one of their new villages.

Emperor Heinrich V played a significant role in Heiligenrode’s early history. He granted the village to the Kloster Kaufungen. This was done at the request of Abbess Gisela. The records show that Heiligenrode and Umbach a nearby village were given together. This suggests they were founded around the same time.

Heiligenrode’s story continues through the centuries. It grew alongside the Nieste River. Two watermills appeared by 1366. They were known as the Obere and Untere Mühle the upper and lower mills. These mills were significant to the village’s economy. They provided income and supported the community.

Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse also left his mark. He held rights over Heiligenrode. A portion of the village’s income went to the Martinskirche in Kassel. The Martinskirche was upgraded to a Kollegiatkirche a collegiate church. This happened in 1372. Heiligenrode’s prosperity was linked to Kassel’s.

Sadly Heiligenrode suffered greatly from war. The conflicts between Hesse and Braunschweig in the 14th century devastated it. The ruins of Sensenstein and Sichelnstein castles stand as silent witnesses. Umbach a nearby village never recovered.

The Thirty Years’ War and the Seven Years’ War brought further hardship. Heiligenrode was repeatedly plundered. The village’s resilience was constantly tested.

Georg Hachenbold a preacher served in Heiligenrode around 1602. He wrote religious texts during his time there. His works included Kriegs Historia Des from[m]en und Gottsfurchtigen Konigs Josaphats. He also wrote Trostschrifftlein Fur alle Betrubte Christen both published in 1602. His writings offer a glimpse into life during a turbulent era.

In 1758 the Battle of Sandershauser Berg took place nearby. Seven thousand Frenchmen fought against five thousand Hessian and Hanoverian troops. The battle was a loss for the Hessians and Hanoverians. The French briefly occupied Kassel. A memorial stone commemorates the brave Hessians.

Heiligenrode endured the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon’s troops marched east from the village through to Russia. The 19th century brought new challenges.

The First World War affected Heiligenrode deeply. Two hundred and thirteen men fought. Forty-five never returned home.

World War II started with the evacuation of Saarbrücken. Families came to live in Heiligenrode. This caused tension and conflict. Heiligenrode suffered several air raids. Many houses including the town hall were destroyed. Heavy fighting occurred in April 1945. Eighty-six people died. Sixty-one were reported missing.

Heiligenrode merged with Sandershausen in 1972. It became part of the Gemeinde Niestetal. The village retained its identity though. The villagers still remember their local hymn. The Knilchelied. This celebrates their unique heritage. This history has shaped Heiligenrode. Heiligenrode’s story continues. It’s a story of resilience and community.
