Imagine standing right in front of Surrey County Hall, its imposing Portland stone facade a testament to a bygone era. This grand building, a Grade II listed landmark, once housed the heart of Surrey’s administration, a hub of decision-making for the county. But its story goes back further, back to a time when the county’s leaders needed a new home, a place to meet and conduct their affairs.

It was in the late 19th century that the need for a new County Hall became apparent. The old Sessions House in Newington, which had served the county for over a century, was now lying outside the county boundaries after the formation of the County of London. The council decided to find a new home within Surrey’s borders, and Kingston upon Thames was eventually chosen as the location.

The building, designed by Charles Henry Howell, was a magnificent example of the classical style, its design reflecting the civic pride of the newly formed Surrey County Council. It was built by Higgs and Hill, and its construction began in 1891. After a two-year construction process, the grand building opened in November 1893, complete with a stately clock tower and sculptures by the renowned firm Farmer & Brindley.

Over the years, Surrey County Hall witnessed many significant events in the county’s history. Meetings on the future of Surrey’s schools, hospitals, and infrastructure were held within its halls. The building was later expanded, and its grand facade became a symbol of the county.

Today, the old Surrey County Hall no longer serves as the county’s administrative hub. The council has moved on, leaving behind a building rich in history and ready for new purposes. But as you stand here today, you can almost feel its history resonating through the stones, a reminder of the county’s past and its enduring legacy.
