IMPO stands for Direcciòn Nacional de Impresiones y Publicaciones Oficiales. That is the National Directorate of Official Printing and Publications. IMPO is Uruguay’s official information center. It is responsible for editing and publishing Uruguay’s official gazette.

IMPO also disseminates current regulations laws and decrees. It ensures the right to information and knowledge of these laws. IMPO’s story began on December 28 1990. The Imprenta Nacional and the Diario Oficial merged. This happened through Law N° 16.170.

Since then IMPO has continued the centuries-old tradition. It publishes the Diario Oficial daily. It also continues the important contributions of these institutions to Uruguayan society.

IMPO has several key tasks. It publishes the Diario Oficial. It also publishes the Registro Nacional de Leyes y Decretos. This is the National Registry of Laws and Decrees. IMPO also publishes various compilations of legal norms.

IMPO also shares legal knowledge through different means. This includes documents and electronic media. It promotes activities of public interest. These activities are determined by the Presidency. IMPO also supports educational and cultural activities. These are determined by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

IMPO gained its current legal status in 1996. It became a non-state public law entity. This was under Budget Law N° 16.736.

Its headquarters are on Avenida 18 de Julio. This is right in front of Montevideo’s City Hall. You can see a large screen there. It provides public access to information. It also shares educational cultural and social content.

IMPO also has a special room. It hosts presentations conferences and seminars. This room honors the writer Felisberto Hernández.
