“Did you know that a chamberlain of Süleyman the Magnificent built this mosque?” I ask. We are standing before the Odabaşı Camii. It is also known as the Has Odabaşı Camii. This mosque carries centuries of history within its walls.

The Odabaşı Camii stands in the Fatih district of Istanbul. Its story began in 1562. Behruz Ağa, a chamberlain to Sultan Süleyman, commissioned its construction. Mimar Sinan, the famed Ottoman architect, designed it. The Odabaşı Camii reflects Sinan’s architectural genius.

Originally, the complex included a school and a bathhouse. Sadly, the bathhouse is lost. Only the mosque and school remain as testaments to Behruz Ağa’s legacy. The Odabaşı Camii became a focal point. It even lent its name to the surrounding neighborhood.

Time took its toll on the Odabaşı Camii. A fire in 1782 damaged the structure. In 1836, Sultan Mahmud II ordered its restoration. This act ensured the mosque’s survival. Further renovations in 1983 gave the Odabaşı Camii its current form.

The Odabaşı Camii’s architecture is notable. It features a single minaret and a wooden structure. The roof has a hip design. Inside, a wooden door leads to the prayer hall. Platforms on either side serve as a space for latecomers. The Odabaşı Camii blends simplicity with Ottoman elegance.

Behruz Ağa rests in the courtyard. His tomb is a reminder of his contribution. You can find his grave on the left when entering from the main gate on Mevlana Street. A fountain sits nearby. There are also rooms for the imam.

Imagine the Odabaşı Camii during its early years. Worshippers gathered. Children learned at the school. The bathhouse steamed with activity. Though time has changed some aspects, the Odabaşı Camii continues to serve its community.

Today, the Odabaşı Camii welcomes worshippers. Its spacious courtyard offers tranquility. The mosque stands as a symbol of faith and Ottoman artistry. When you visit, remember Behruz Ağa’s vision. Appreciate Mimar Sinan’s skill. Reflect on the history held within these walls. The Odabaşı Camii is a treasure. It connects us to Istanbul’s rich past.
