Here, at this seemingly ordinary spot in Karlsruhe, tragedy struck. This is the Buback-Denkmal. It marks the location of a brutal assassination. It’s a stark reminder of a dark chapter in German history.

The Buback-Denkmal commemorates Siegfried Buback. He was the Attorney General of West Germany. Buback served from 1974 until his death in 1977. His assassination marked the beginning of the “German Autumn”. This was a series of violent events.

Siegfried Buback’s life was complex. He studied at the University of Leipzig. From 1940 to 1945, he was a member of the Nazi Party. He served as a soldier in World War II. From 1945 to 1947, he was a prisoner of war in France. He became an attorney in 1953.

Buback first gained public attention in 1962. He accused the magazine Der Spiegel of high treason. This led to a landmark court ruling on freedom of the press. In the 1970s, Buback was a strong opponent of the Red Army Faction. The RAF was a far-left terrorist group.

On April 7, 1977, Siegfried Buback was murdered. The assassination happened while he was traveling to the Bundesgerichtshof in Karlsruhe. He was with his driver Wolfgang Göbel and judicial officer Georg Wurster. As Buback’s Mercedes stopped at a traffic light, a motorcycle pulled alongside. Two people were on the Suzuki GS 750 motorcycle. They wore olive green helmets. The passenger fired fifteen shots into the car with a semi-automatic rifle.

Buback and Göbel died at the scene. Wurster died six days later from his injuries. The Buback-Denkmal serves as a chilling reminder. Even though several RAF members were charged, key details remain unsolved. Who drove the motorcycle and who fired the weapon? These questions haunt the Buback-Denkmal.

In 2007, new information surfaced. Peter-Jürgen Boock, a former RAF member, contacted Buback’s son. He claimed that Stefan Wisniewski was the shooter. Verena Becker, another RAF member, supported this claim. In 2012, Becker was convicted of assisting the murderers. She was sentenced to four years in prison.

The Buback-Denkmal is more than just a memorial stone. It is a symbol of justice. It’s a place to remember the victims of political violence. The inscription reads: “Siegfried Buback, Georg Wurster, Wolfgang Göbel were murdered here on April 7, 1977.” It is a simple but powerful statement.

Take a moment to reflect on the events that transpired here. The Buback-Denkmal is a place for quiet contemplation. It is a space to honor the memory of those who lost their lives. It reminds us of the importance of justice. It also reminds us of the fragility of peace. The Buback-Denkmal stands as a solemn reminder. It urges us to learn from the past.
