Feel the ancient stones beneath your feet. This is the Eyüp Sultan Mosque. More than just a building it’s a living testament to faith history and resilience.

The Eyüp Sultan Mosque stands proudly in Istanbul’s Eyüp district. It’s a place of immense religious significance for Muslims worldwide. The current structure dates back to the early 19th century. It replaced an earlier mosque built in 1458. This earlier building was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II just five years after his conquest of Constantinople. His teacher’s dream about a commemorative mosque at Abu Ayyub al-Ansari’s burial site prompted this.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari a companion of the Prophet Muhammad is buried here. His tomb lies within the mosque complex. It’s a place of pilgrimage. The mosque’s name itself honors this sacred figure. Many believe his death occurred during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in the 670s.

The mosque was significantly rebuilt in 1800 under Sultan Selim III. This was after the previous structure fell into ruin. Possibly earthquake damage was the culprit. Notice the Ottoman Baroque style. It’s blended beautifully with the original Classical Ottoman architecture. The two minarets however remain largely from earlier periods. They were rebuilt at different times by different sultans.

The Eyüp Sultan Mosque played a vital role in Ottoman coronations. New sultans would process along the Culus Yolu the Accession Way. Here they were girded with the Sword of Osman marking the beginning of their reign. Today the atmosphere remains deeply spiritual.

Look at the intricate tilework. Some dates from the 16th century. It showcases the height of Iznik tile design. Some panels however were added during the 1798-1799 reconstruction. Notice the mosque’s layout. There are two courtyards. The inner one houses al-Ansari’s shrine. The outer one originally served as the sultan’s private entrance.

The mosque’s significance isn’t solely religious. It’s also a social hub. Mass circumcision ceremonies for boys have been held here. It’s a popular spot for iftar during Ramadan. People gather to break their fast. The Eyüp Sultan Mosque remains a destination for pilgrims and visitors alike from all corners of Turkey. It’s a place where history spirituality and community intertwine. A true treasure of Istanbul.
