Perhaps the most vibrant explosion of colour in Taranaki awaits us at Pukeiti. Founded in 1951, Pukeiti is more than just a garden. It is a testament to one man’s vision and the collective effort to create a world-class rhododendron garden.
William Douglas Cook, the founder, was captivated by the lush landscape. He saw the potential for a garden of international significance. With Russell Matthews, he secured a 153.5-acre block. It had neglected rhododendrons that were still thriving. Cook donated the block to the Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust. Work soon began.
The official opening of Pukeiti took place on 1 November 1951. Visitors walked from the shack to the summit. They followed a bush track and a partly formed road.
Imagine the early days at Pukeiti. People endured gut-busting work. They shared a bush camaraderie. Gallons of tea fueled their efforts. Each task completed brought them closer to their dream.
Today, Cook’s vision is a reality. Pukeiti is a unique temperate rainforest garden. It is known all over the world. It boasts one of the biggest rhododendron collections. It is a diverse collection of exotics. These plants create a vibrant display among native rainforest and mountain streams.
Pukeiti covers 360 hectares. 26 hectares are garden. The rest is original and regenerating rainforest. 21 kilometers of walkways wind through the property.
The iconic waterwheel is more than just a pretty picture. It still provides much of the water supply.

Pukeiti offers a range of garden walks. These walks range from 35 minutes to two hours. The Rhododendron Stroll takes 35 minutes. The Valley of the Giants Walk takes 50 minutes. Mobility vehicle service is available for those less able to walk. It runs between October and March on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Rainforest Centre sits at the entrance to Pukeiti. It features a multi-media interpretation area.
The Rainforest Eatery focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It offers fantastic service.
Pukeiti’s flowering season starts in July. The large-leaf rhododendrons are the first to bloom. By October, the garden is alive with colour. Complementary plantings continue the display. The vireya rhododendrons flower a few times a year. They provide year-round vibrancy in the Vireya Walk.
