Founded in 1989 by Jean-Luc and Takako Richard, this gallery has evolved into an international hub. It showcases both emerging talents and established masters.
Galerie Richard first opened its doors as Galerie OZ in the Bastille area of Paris. It quickly gained recognition for its focus on new digital art. Pioneers like Vera Molnar and Artus Pixel were among the first to be promoted. Galerie OZ became known for introducing New York New Wave artists to Paris. Names like Arch Connelly, Rhonda Zwillinger and Pepon Osorio were showcased. The gallery also represented Robert Groborne, Milan Kunc and Erwin Olaf.
In 2002, the gallery moved to Île Saint-Louis. It was renamed Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard. The focus shifted to new painting at a time when many considered painting dead. The gallery primarily organized solo shows. Artists like Shirley Kaneda, Paul Henry Ramirez and Tim Bavington were featured.
Galerie Richard moved to its current location at 74 rue de Turenne in The Marais in 2006. A year later, it doubled its exhibition space to 400 square meters. The gallery expanded its roster. Benjamin Edwards, Pedro Barbeito and Joseph Nechvatal joined. Established artists like Frank Stella, Bram Bogart and Ron Gorchov were also exhibited.
In 2011, Galerie Richard opened a gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan. The gallery officially adopted the name Galerie Richard at this time. Takesada Matsutani had a retrospective exhibition in Paris in 2012. He had his first solo retrospective exhibition in New York in 2013. This coincided with the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum’s Gutai Art Association exhibition.
The gallery developed a program featuring figurative digital photography. Artists like Dionisio González, Yang Yi and Lauren Marsolier were included. Peter Rogiers, William Bradley and Norio Imai joined the gallery. Galerie Richard organized Norio Imai retrospective exhibitions in New York in 2014 and in Paris in 2015.
Galerie Richard celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014. A large exhibition of 40 artists was held. The same year, the gallery presented a duo show John Armleder and Jean Carzou. It was shown in New York, Paris and at the Untitled Art fair in Miami.
The New York gallery moved to 121 Orchard Street on The Lower East Side in 2015. It closed in 2021. Artists like Bram Bogart, Stefan Hoenerloh and Li Wei were shown there.
Today, Galerie Richard continues to thrive in Paris. It remains a member of the Professional Committee of Art Galleries. It participates in international art fairs. The gallery also publishes monographs on various artists and their work. Galerie Richard stands as a testament to the enduring power of art. It is a celebration of innovation and creativity.
