A park named after a Chicago socialite, Ada Park stands proudly in the Morgan Park neighborhood. What began as Loomis Street Park in 1930, was renamed in honor of Ada Sawyer Garrett, whose generous donations and contributions made a lasting impact on the city. The park expanded over the years, welcoming more visitors and offering new recreational activities. It served a significant purpose, providing a recreational space for the growing African-American population in the neighborhood. It’s hard to imagine a time when the park wasn’t full of laughter, the sound of children playing, and the aroma of grilled hot dogs. Today, Ada Park is a beloved community center, offering various programs and events throughout the year. The park boasts a gymnasium, a fitness center, multi-purpose clubrooms, and a sparkling swimming pool where kids splash and enjoy summer days. Ada, a true pillar of Chicago’s early history, even though her contributions remain largely unnoticed, continues to inspire. Her legacy lives on in the park.
