High above the bustling city, have you ever paused to consider the stories whispered by the wind at Mirante da Freira? This viewpoint is one of the newest jewels in the crown of Tijuca National Park. It offers more than just a pretty panorama.

Mirante da Freira is a stop along the Transcarioca trail. This long path links the West Zone to the South Zone. The hike to Mirante da Freira is easy to moderately challenging. It usually takes about an hour. It is absolutely worth it.

Imagine standing here, feeling the gentle breeze. You look out over the west side of the city from a unique angle. The Tijuca Forest surrounds you. The air is fresh and clean. You are far from the urban frenzy below.

The trail to Mirante da Freira itself is an adventure. The path begins a few meters past the entrance to the Tijuca Forest Park on Rua Amado Nervo. A sign marks the trail entrance. It starts with a staircase made of wood and earth.

The hike is about 12 kilometers long. It can take around 2 hours and 47 minutes. The route has varied terrain. Expect some running stretches. You will encounter lots of ups and downs.

As you hike remember some practical tips. Wear appropriate clothing. The vegetation can sometimes scratch your legs and arms. If you wear shorts consider pairing them with long socks. The forest is humid so prepare to sweat.

Bring essentials such as sunscreen, repellent and water. Pack some sandwiches or snacks. There aren’t any shops along the way. Only at the Alto da Boa Vista you can buy something.

Trail running shoes with good grip will help a lot. Hiking poles are also helpful. Always carry a plastic bag to take your trash back with you. Never leave any litter in the forest.

The trail is mostly uphill for the first 2.3 kilometers. When you reach a fork in the path, turn right to get to Mirante da Freira. From the fork it is only 600 meters on a gentle slope.

Continue for another 1.7 kilometers to Morro do Queimado. You will climb to the highest point of the adventure. Enjoy the amazing views.

From Morro do Queimado to Pedra da Proa it is downhill. Be careful because there are loose stones. Pedra da Proa offers fantastic views of Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone.

Keep going for another 600 meters downhill to reach the famous Mesa do Imperador. The final part of the trail holds some great surprises.

This trail offers not only physical activity. It provides immersion in nature’s beauty. The views from Mirante da Freira offer a unique perspective on Rio. Remember to respect the environment. Take only memories and leave only footprints.
