Imagine strolling along the Bodenseeufer. The Konstanzer Pfennig was minted here. It showed a bishop. The Konstanzer Leinwand was traded here. It was known far and wide.

The Thirty Years’ War touched Konstanz. The Swedes besieged the city in 1633. The city was one of the most important fortresses on Lake Constance during the conflict.

In 1785, Emperor Joseph II encouraged Genevan refugees to settle here. Jacques-Louis Macaire de L’Or established a textile factory. He laid the foundation for Konstanz’s industry in the 19th and 20th centuries.

French troops occupied Konstanz several times. The city suffered. The population decreased. This was due to the cost of housing soldiers.

In 1806, Konstanz became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. The city became the capital of the Seekreis. In 1863, Konstanz connected to the railway. The population grew. The medieval city walls came down.

During World War I, the German border with Switzerland closed. Relations with Thurgau were restricted. Smuggling increased. The city suffered inflation after the war.

In 1935, Konstanz became an independent city district. The city remained the seat of the district administration. Jewish people were excluded from public life. In 1938, the Konstanz Synagogue burned. Many Jewish residents deported.

During World War II, Konstanz avoided Allied bombing. The city kept its lights on at night. It looked like neutral Switzerland.

French troops occupied Konstanz in 1945. The city became part of the French zone. In 1966, the University founded. Konstanz experienced a new period of growth.
