In 1984 Patricia Hayes became the second layperson to lead the university. This marked another step toward greater inclusivity.

St Edward’s continued to grow. President George E. Martin oversaw a period of massive expansion. New buildings rose transforming the campus. Enrollment doubled and the endowment increased substantially. St. Edward’s developed global partnerships. It even founded the Holy Cross Institute. This aimed to uphold the university’s mission and values. The university continues to strive for excellence. In 2022 Montserrat Fuentes became the first Hispanic president of St. Edward’s University.

Today St Edward’s University boasts a diverse student body representing numerous countries. It offers a wide array of academic programs across several schools.
