Is education your passion? Then Fakultas Ilmu Pendidikan UNJ is a place to know. It stands as a cornerstone of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This faculty is known as FIP. It has a rich history and a commitment to developing future educators.

FIP develops educational science. It also develops teaching science. This happens through formal and informal education. It is achieved via scientific studies. These are conducted by various departments. They also use study centers or laboratories. These exist within FIP UNJ.

But how did Fakultas Ilmu Pendidikan UNJ come to be? To understand its story we must delve into the history of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. UNJ’s roots trace back to May 16 1964. That date was the birth of IKIP Jakarta. IKIP means Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan. This translates to the Institute of Teacher Education and Educational Sciences.

Before UNJ existed Indonesia needed more teachers. To solve this the government created teacher education courses. In the 1950s B-I B-II and PGSLP courses prepared teachers. They were for secondary schools.

The government then established Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru or PTPG in 1954. This was to improve teacher quality and quantity. PTPGs were founded in four cities. These were Batusangkar Manado Bandung and Malang. So there were two types of institutions that produced teachers. These were the B-I/B-II/PGSLP courses and PTPG. Both institutions then merged. In 1957 PTPG integrated into the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. This faculty was at the nearest university.

In 1963 the Ministry of Basic Education created Institut Pendidikan Guru or IPG. It produced secondary school teachers. Also in 1961 the B-I and B-II courses integrated into FKIP. FKIP means Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan. This translates to the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. FKIP was under the Ministry of Higher Education. This system was ineffective. So the B-I and B-II courses in Jakarta merged into FKIP at Universitas Indonesia.

In 1963 an integration of teacher education institutions was established. This meant that FKIP and IPG became IKIP. FKIP Universitas Indonesia and IPG Jakarta merged to become IKIP Jakarta. IKIP then expanded its mandate. It developed educational and non-educational sciences.

On August 4 1999 IKIP Jakarta became Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This was based on Presidential Decree 093/1999. The inauguration was held by the President of Indonesia. It took place on August 31 1999 at the State Palace. Universitas Negeri Jakarta’s anniversary is on May 16 1964. This is the same as IKIP Jakarta’s anniversary.
