It served a growing Catholic community in North Riverside after World War II. Before the church was completed parishioners attended Mass at Komarek School. Father A H Menarik became the first pastor. He was known for his love of fishing. He even mounted a fish he’d caught in the school basement. This space was later renamed Menarik Hall in his honor. Mater Christi Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. The Mother of Mothers Shrine a magnificent Italian sculpted Carrara marble statue is the centerpiece. This stunning shrine depicts Mary Mother of God and the Christ Child looking lovingly at a modern mother and child. Dedicated on Mother’s Day in 1956 it quickly became a national shrine. People from all over the world came to pray here. At its peak two people worked daily answering letters and requests. Today the area around the shrine has been beautifully refurbished making it a place for meditation and reflection. Mater Christi Church has been a vital part of North Riverside for decades. It continues to be a central point for its community and beyond. Its history is rich its devotion deep.
