Whispers of resilience echo within these walls. Right here stands the Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Armenian people. This church, nestled in the heart of Buenos Aires, tells a story of survival, faith, and community. The Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad emerged from the ashes of tragedy. In the 1920s, Armenian survivors of the 1915 massacres sought refuge in various countries, including Argentina. With no established Armenian evangelical churches, they began meeting in homes, yearning for spiritual solace and connection. Professor Hrant Abadjian started Christian gatherings in 1925 at the Primera Iglesia Metodista. In the same year, the Manoukian family opened their home to the burgeoning congregation, marking the humble beginnings of the Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad. By 1929, Pastor Haig Adadurian arrived from the US, further solidifying the foundation of the church. The congregation initially gathered at the Primera Metodista Central. Later, under Pastor Abraham H. Hartutian, they ministered to over 100 families. The church’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. In 1933, the congregation split. One group remained at the Metodista Central. The other, seeking to uphold the core teachings of the Bible, invited Pastor Mihran Balian in 1935. They found a home at the current location of the Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad on Avellaneda 2540, then rented from the Iglesia Metodista de Flores. Pastor Balian’s leadership proved fruitful. Within a decade, he spearheaded the purchase of the building, a testament to the community’s dedication. The Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad continued to evolve. Pastor Iervant Bogosian unified the two congregations under one roof. Pastors Mousayan, Salibian, and Djimovian, particularly Mousayan, also contributed significantly. A period of renewal swept through the church in 1951, marked by youth engagement, publications, and vibrant activities. Pastor Avedís Zarifian led the church from 1952 to 1962. The Armenian communities in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Montevideo experienced a spiritual revival under Pastor Vahram Tatikian. This revival brought forth numerous church workers, including José Balián, Jorge Himitian, and Samuel Berberían. The Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad expanded its outreach. They published the newspaper “Avedaper” and started a Sunday school for all ages. The church acquired a property in Monte Grande for retreats and activities. They held their first baptismal ceremony at the Caballito Baptist Temple. The Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad also embraced collaboration. Pastors from the Alianza Cristiana y Misionera led a Bible school. Pastor José Balian served for 17 years, assisted by Pastors Enoc Elmassian and Rubén Kassabian. The church pioneered a “Consultorio Espiritual” in 1979, providing guidance and support. They had radio broadcasts on prominent stations, reaching a wider audience. A theological training school operated from 1988 to 1996. The church continued to grow under Pastor Rubén Kassabian, who oversaw the establishment of an annex on Rivadavia Avenue in 1998. This annex, later relocated to Olivera Street, aimed to serve the Floresta and Villa Luro neighborhoods. The church underwent significant renovations in the early 2000s, including expanding the temple, adding a multipurpose hall, classrooms, and a sports court. The Iglesia Evangelista Congregacional Armenia Santísima Trinidad stands as a beacon of hope. It continues to serve the community, offering spiritual guidance, assistance to those in need, and a place of belonging for Armenian immigrants and the wider community. The church’s history reflects the unwavering faith and resilience of a people who, despite enduring immense hardship, have created a vibrant and thriving community.
