Who was Otto Lara Resende? Here at this monument, we celebrate the life of Otto Lara Resende. Otto Lara Resende was a prominent Brazilian journalist and writer. He was born in São João del Rei, Minas Gerais, Brazil on May 1, 1922, and died in Rio de Janeiro on December 28, 1992. Otto Lara Resende started his career early, teaching French at fourteen and working as a journalist by eighteen. He contributed to numerous publications, including O Diário, Diário de Minas, Diário de Notícias, O Globo, Diário Carioca, Correio da Manhã, Última Hora, Jornal do Brasil, Manchete magazine, Senhor magazine, and TV Globo. His writing spanned various forms, from short stories to novels and columns. Some of his notable works include “O lado humano” (short stories, 1952), “Boca do inferno” (short stories, 1957 and 1998), and his only novel, “O braço direito” (1964). He even had a unique connection with Nelson Rodrigues, who featured him as a character in his chronicles and a play title. Otto Lara Resende was a prolific writer who captured the human experience through his work. His insightful observations and literary talent earned him a place in the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1979. Otto Lara Resende’s legacy as a journalist and writer continues to inspire. He was a keen observer of life and a master storyteller. His words resonate with readers, offering glimpses into the human condition and the world around us.
