Could the name Harmantepe, a district within the Kağıthane municipality in Istanbul, suggest rolling hills? Harmantepe sits nestled within the larger district of Kağıthane. Kağıthane itself boasts a rich history. It once charmed visitors as the Sweet Waters of Europe.

Kağıthane’s story stretches back centuries. During Suleiman the Magnificent’s reign, Kağıthane, then named Sadabad, served as a royal playground. The Ottoman court hunted and rode here amidst extensive forests. Mansions and palaces sprang up later, especially during Sultan Ahmed III’s Tulip Age in the 18th century. Yirmisekiz Mehmet Çelebi had the Sadabad Palace constructed in 1722.

However, the Patrona Halil Revolt in 1730 led to its destruction. Later, Sultan Selim III and Krikor Balyan tried to revive Sadabad’s glory. Even in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, locals flocked to Kağıthane on Fridays to enjoy its beauty.

The Turkish Republic’s founding in 1923 brought change. Factories transformed the Golden Horn’s northern end into an industrial zone. From the 1950s, migrants from Anatolia arrived seeking work. They built illegal slums called gecekondus. Over time, these were legalized and replaced by residential buildings.

Kağıthane has undergone rapid urban regeneration in the 21st century. Its central location and transport links have fueled this transformation. Today, Kağıthane is served by metro lines M7 and M11.

Harmantepe shares in Kağıthane’s story. It is a residential neighborhood within this evolving district. The zip code for Harmantepe is 34410. As Kağıthane continues to modernize, Harmantepe also changes. It adapts to the needs of its residents within the larger urban landscape.
