Summoned from myth, the Arahito Shrine beckons. Here at Arahito Shrine, amidst the bustling energy of Fukuoka, lies a place steeped in legend. Arahito Shrine connects to the very origins of Japan’s Shinto faith. This is where the legendary story of Izanagi and Izanami unfolds. This is where the god Izanagi performed a ritual cleansing, a ritual that birthed the three deities enshrined here. These three deities, Sokotsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, Nakatsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, and Uwatsutsu-no-o-no-mikoto, are collectively known as the Sumyoshi-Sanjin. The very name, Arahito Shrine, reflects a divine appearance. It whispers of a time when the gods walked among mortals. Legend claims that during Empress Jingu’s reign, these gods manifested themselves, guiding her to victory at sea. In gratitude, she bestowed upon them the title Arahito-gami, meaning “gods who appeared in human form”. The shrine has witnessed centuries of history. Around 900 years ago, the powerful Fujiwara clan elevated the shrine, showering it with gifts and expanding its influence. Later, Arahito Shrine fell victim to war and destruction. However, the shrine’s story doesn’t end there. Through the efforts of local villagers, the shrine was rebuilt and continues to thrive. Arahito Shrine survived. It stands as a testament to resilience. The shrine remains a vibrant hub. It is the heart of the local community. Arahito Shrine is a beacon of history and faith, a reminder of the enduring power of belief.
