Before us stands Parque General Juan Gregorio de Las Heras a vibrant green space in the heart of Buenos Aires. Its history is rich and layered. It wasn’t always a park.
For many years this land housed the infamous National Penitentiary. Built between 1872 and 1876 it operated until 1962. Locals nicknamed it Tierra del Fuego its imposing walls resembling the prison in Ushuaia. This grim building was more than just a prison. It was the site of a tragic event. On June 12 1956 General Juan José Valle was executed here. He led a failed civic-military uprising against the government of General Pedro Eugenio Aramburu.
The penitentiary’s demolition began in 1961. The area was then a wasteland. Young people used it for football games. Gradually the area transformed. In the 1980s the park began to take shape. The Escuela de Lenguas Vivas was built in 1972. A makeshift amusement park with carousels and go-karts also appeared. Later a modest Catholic church Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Loreto was constructed. Two schools Escuela Primaria Común N° 16 Wenceslao Posse and Escuela N° 26 Distrito Escolar 1 Van Gelderen also found their place within the park’s borders. The high and old palm trees you see today are believed to have been inside the penitentiary.
Today Parque General Juan Gregorio de Las Heras is a beloved urban oasis. It covers almost twelve hectares. It’s bounded by Avenida General Las Heras Avenida Coronel Díaz and the streets Jerónimo Salguero and Juncal. Its gentle slope was once part of a larger landscape. The area was eventually urbanized attracting a high-income population. The park replaced a brewery Cervecería Palermo that once stood on the site.
In 2008 the park was officially declared a National Historic Site. Granite blocks and plaques mark the spot where General Valle was executed. They commemorate all those who died during those turbulent times. This park is more than a green space. It’s a testament to Argentina’s history its struggles and its resilience. It is a place where the echoes of the past blend seamlessly with the joys of the present. The park is a space of reflection a tranquil escape in the midst of a busy city. A place where history and nature intertwine beautifully.
