Gazing up at those thirteen shimmering domes, one can’t help but wonder about the stories they hold. Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, a beacon of faith and heritage here in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village. Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the dreams and dedication of Ukrainian immigrants who sought to create a “New Rus” right here in Chicago. The church, completed in 1915, was designed by Worthmann & Steinbach. They modeled it after the magnificent Saint Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv, a nod to their homeland. Those thirteen copper domes, gleaming against the sky, represent Christ and the twelve apostles, a powerful symbol of faith. Look closely and you’ll see intricate cornices and gutter elements, all inspired by Ukrainian traditions. Inside, Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church is just as breathtaking. Mosaics and frescoes adorn the walls, depicting scenes from the life of Christ, Mary, and numerous saints. Above the main altar, a fresco of St. Sophia’s Cathedral connects this Chicago church to its Ukrainian roots. A massive gold chandelier, crafted in Greece, hangs from the main dome. With nine tiers and 480 lights, it’s believed to be the largest of its kind in the United States, illuminating the rich iconography below. The stained glass windows, designed by the Munich Studio of Chicago, cast colorful patterns across the space. Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the enduring spirit of community. It serves as the seat of the Eparchy of Saint Nicholas of Chicago, a center of Ukrainian Greek Catholic life in the United States.
