Hidden in Lyon’s Duchère district lies Rue Jacqueline Descout a small street with a big story. It’s a recent addition barely existing before 2022. This unassuming street honors Jacqueline Descout a remarkable woman. She wasn’t a famous actress or a powerful politician. Jacqueline was a dedicated community activist.

Born in Cairo in 1916 she married Armand Descout. Together they bravely participated in the French Resistance. They helped escapees reach safety in the free zone. After returning to France in 1956 they continued their selfless work. They aided the underprivileged. They worked closely with Father de Galard and Father Lebret two influential figures in Lyon.

Jacqueline’s dedication to her community extended to the Duchère. She was a driving force behind the local community center. She even created the Duchère newsletter. After her husband died she opened a neighborhood restaurant Le Petit Duduche. This restaurant provided support to unemployed individuals. Her tireless efforts made a lasting impact on the Duchère. Jacqueline Descout passed away in 1987. Her legacy however lives on.

Rue Jacqueline Descout consists primarily of a striking triple building. The building is distinctive with its white facade and interconnected balconies. The building incorporates two separate structures. One is a two-story Degas building. The other is a four-story Cézanne building. The street’s architectural design is unique. It elegantly blends different architectural styles. The street also serves a practical purpose allowing cars to exit Rue Joussot.

This small street in Lyon’s Duchère pays tribute to Jacqueline Descout. Her commitment to community and social justice deserves recognition. The design of the street mirrors the unique blend of practicality and artistry that characterized her life. It is a place that embodies the spirit of a woman who made a difference.
