Is water truly the start of it all? Welcome to the Deutsches Pumpenmuseum. It is a tribute to pumps and their vital role in our history. Here, in Bodenheim near Mainz, we celebrate over 2,000 years of pump technology.

The Deutsches Pumpenmuseum was founded in 1987. It marked the 125th anniversary of the HILGE pump factory. Philipp Berdelle-Hilge had the idea. He wanted to showcase the evolution of pumps. The museum became a reality thanks to the HILGE company museum. Further purchases, meticulous replicas and generous donations enriched its collection.

In 1994, the museum transitioned. It became the “Stiftung Berdelle-Hilge Deutsches Pumpen-Museum”. This ensured the preservation of its technical collection.

Inside the Deutsches Pumpenmuseum, an impressive 400 square meters awaits. The displays aim to educate and technically represent different eras. Old brochures aided documentation efforts. However, dating items proved challenging. Even companies offering loans sometimes lacked manufacturing dates.

Here at the Deutsches Pumpenmuseum you can trace the development of pumps. You’ll see originals from the 18th to 20th centuries. Also, there are true-to-scale replicas made from original materials. The exhibits include a 19th-century pump workshop. Early fire pumps are displayed here too.

The Deutsches Pumpenmuseum collection is diverse. It starts with the Archimedes screw. This device was used for nearly four millennia. Roman piston pumps and medieval displacement pumps are also on display. You’ll also see 19th-century steam and piston pumps. The Papin pump from the 18th century is showcased. Designs by Le Demour, Fahrenheit, and Baker are featured. The Massachusetts pump and the first multistage pump are present. There are also pumps from the 19th century leading to today’s standard pump.

The Deutsches Pumpenmuseum also shows the first side channel pumps. The first submersible pump is here. You can also view early centrifugal pumps with hydrodynamic seals. The evolution of centrifugal pump impellers is displayed.

The Deutsches Pumpenmuseum shows pumps in technical literature. Copper engravings from the 17th and 18th centuries are included. Textbooks and old company catalogs offer context. The museum explains pump seal development. See everything from hemp seals to modern mechanical seals.

A highlight is the wine pump developed by Peter Hilge in 1865. This hand-operated pump transferred wine between barrels. It pumped both forward and backward. This prevented any loss of wine, a prized feature. It became famous as the “Rheinische Circularpumpe”. Thus, technology transformed into cultural history.

Located on the company grounds, the Deutsches Pumpenmuseum is accessible. Both tech enthusiasts and laypersons can enjoy guided tours. Prepare to marvel at pump inventions since the Archimedes screw.
