Ever wonder how Budapest lights up at night? It is thanks in no small part to the Kelenfold Power Plant. This industrial giant stands as a testament to a bygone era. The Kelenfold Power Plant began producing electricity in June 1914. It was part of Budapest’s ambitious electrification program.
Initially, low-pressure coal-fired boilers generated steam. This steam then powered two 7.5 MWe turbo generator units. These units supplied 10 KV electricity. As Budapest grew, so did the Kelenfold Power Plant.
Between 1922 and 1943, new steam boilers and turbines were installed. This expansion ensured the plant could meet the city’s increasing demands. By the time World War II loomed, the Kelenfold Power Plant boasted impressive capabilities. It operated with 19 boilers and 8 turbines. These ran at 38 bar steam pressure. Much of this equipment was state-of-the-art. It was proudly made by Hungarian manufacturers.
Significant changes occurred between 1962 and 1972. These changes were made to meet heat supply demands. Condensing technology was replaced. Back pressure and heating turbines took its place. District heating reliability improved. This was achieved with hot water boilers. Natural gas gradually replaced coal and heavy oil firing. This shift marked a move towards cleaner energy sources.
The buildings we see today were designed by Kálmán Reichl and Virgil Borbír between 1927 and 1929. Their architectural vision created a functional and aesthetically pleasing industrial complex. The Art Deco control room is a particular highlight. It showcases the elegance of the era.
A significant part of the Kelenfold Power Plant was shut down in 2005. This included the iconic control room. However, a portion of the plant remains in operation. It continues to contribute to Budapest’s energy supply. Today, the Kelenfold Power Plant is protected by law. It cannot be demolished. Instead, it stands as a protected industrial heritage site.

The Kelenfold Power Plant provides a tangible connection to the past. The Kelenfold Power Plant also provides district heating services. It ensures a steady supply of warmth to many homes and buildings across Budapest. It supplies heat and hot water to 41150 homes and 1800 other users. It has a heat output of 321 MW and an electricity output of 177.8 MW.
