“1908. A remarkable structure rises on Missouri Avenue” That’s the year Dallas architect James Edward Flanders designed the original Missouri Avenue Methodist Church. He created a unique design. He didn’t place the usual tall tower at a corner. Instead he incorporated a curved porch spanning towers of varying heights. This is Saint Andrew United Methodist Church’s precursor. Its taller tower is clad in metal shingles. Round corner buttresses rise to pinnacles alongside the spire. The shorter tower uses the same buff brick as the church. It features a pyramidal cap with a widely projecting eave. These are signature Flanders touches. The horizontal eaves and stringcourses show Prairie School influence. Yet some windows have pointed Gothic arches. Like many Flanders’ Methodist churches it had the Akron Plan’s curved seating. An extra room could open onto the worship area if needed.
Saint Andrew United Methodist Church has a rich history. It started small in 1888 with just 15 members. Growth led to three moves before settling at its current location. This was in 1950 on the Historic South Side of Dallas. This beautiful church became a community hub. It once housed a child care center and a Boy Scout troop. Its gym hosted youth parties lock-ins and basketball games. More recently Sidewalk Sunday School engaged the children and youth.
The church’s dedication to education is striking. Members served as principals teachers nurses doctors. They held University Board of Trustee positions and were civil rights leaders. For 125 years Saint Andrew United Methodist Church shaped its community through education music mission and worship. Today it partners with Van Zandt-Guinn Elementary School. It offers spiritual and social activities. It supports HIV/AIDS patients. It maintains a community garden and helps the homeless. Its involvement with Bethlehem Center’s clothes closet shows its commitment. The church’s designation as a historical landmark in 2002 is a testament to its enduring legacy. It has a Board of Trustees and an Administrative Council providing leadership. Its cornerstone laying happened May 20 1951 with J H Carruthers as pastor.
