Curious to know where art meets community in South London? That’s the South London Gallery. Established in 1891, it stands as a testament to bringing art to the people. William Rossiter founded it. His vision was simple. He wanted to showcase donated works from artists and patrons.
The South London Gallery’s history traces back further. It began with the South London Working Men’s College in 1868. The college was on Blackfriars Road. Thomas Henry Huxley was the Principal. He was the grandfather of Aldous Huxley.
Now, fast forward to today. The South London Gallery offers five free exhibitions each year. It also provides films and educational projects for all ages. Its permanent collection boasts 20th-century prints. These works pertain to South London. Artists like John Piper and Keith Coventry are featured.
In the early 1990s, the South London Gallery championed young British artists. David Thorp was the director then. Artists like Gavin Turk and Sarah Lucas gained recognition. Damien Hirst was also showcased. The gallery was the first to show Tracey Emin’s tent installation. It was titled ‘Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995’.
The South London Gallery gained international presence. It showcased artists like Alfredo Jaar and Eva Rothschild. Ryan Gander was also featured. In 2010, the gallery expanded into a neighboring Victorian house. This added more exhibition spaces. The Clore Education Studio was created. There is also an upstairs flat for artist residencies. Margot Heller is the current director. She has positioned the South London Gallery as a must-see space. It is a cultural hub with a strong sense of community. She commissioned the Orozco Garden. It opened in 2016. Gabriel Orozco designed it with 6a Architects. The garden provides direct access for residents into the gallery.
There are plans for further expansion. The adjacent former Peckham Road Fire Station will open. It will provide more exhibition spaces. There will be educational programs, learning spaces, and artist studios. The South London Gallery also has an extensive archive. It includes material relating to the local area’s history.
