Hidden in plain sight, the University of Auckland Science Centre is more than just a building. It’s a hub of discovery. The Science Centre, completed in 2016, anchors the University’s Science Precinct. This 23,000 square meter, $160 million structure houses the Schools of Psychology, Chemistry, and Environment, as well as the Faculty of Science. The Science Centre isn’t just a single building. It’s a complex comprising three buildings: 301, 302, and 303. Building 302 is particularly noteworthy. It’s the first building in New Zealand to utilize tested buckling-restraint braces, a cutting-edge technology imported from the USA. This innovative approach is part of a larger $200 million redevelopment project. The project aims to modernize the university’s facilities. The refurbishment of the existing buildings and the construction of the new Building 302 added 38,000 square meters of state-of-the-art space. The Science Centre was designed to be a “window into the life of the University.” The architecture fosters social and academic interaction. Its staggered “rooms” and central atrium create a dynamic environment for research, learning, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The building’s design promotes connectivity, with link bridges improving access between the refurbished buildings and the new structure.
