Here, beneath the gaze of Oprah Winfrey, a legend is immortalized on Green Street. This is the Oprah Winfrey Mural. It stands as a vibrant testament to her indelible mark on Chicago’s West Loop.

Before us stretches a colossal artwork. It spans an entire block on the west side of Green Street. This mural, one of the city’s largest, celebrates Oprah Winfrey’s legacy. She significantly boosted the West Loop long before Google or Fulton Market’s rise.

From 1990 to 2011, the “Oprah Winfrey Show” called the West Loop home. Harpo Studios was a magnet for attention. This mural is the first public art piece to honor Oprah’s lasting impact. It is surprising, given her immense influence.

In 2020, B_Line Projects spearheaded this tribute. They chose four Chicago artists. Shawn Michael Warren, Jane Barthes, Anna Murphy, and Kalan Strauss brought the vision to life. Their diverse styles create a unique design. Oprah’s portrait merges with geometric shapes and nature. Floral patterns, clouds, and a bird add whimsy.

Levar Hoard of B_Line Projects titled it “Oprah and the Magpie in Wonderland”. The artists sought Oprah’s permission to use her image. Imagine the challenge of contacting Oprah during COVID.

Shawn Michael Warren was the lead artist. He painted Oprah’s portrait. He met a former Harpo staff member while working at night. The staff member told Oprah about the mural. Oprah commented on Warren’s Instagram post. She expressed gratitude for the honor. She felt the mural captured her essence.

The mural is on the side of the Porte apartment building. The building is at 855 W. Madison St. It faces Green Street between Monroe and Madison. Completed in October, the mural stretches 300 feet long. It stands 26 feet tall. Warren described it as planting a flag. Oprah claimed the West Loop long ago. It happened before its major evolution.

Warren later painted another portrait of Oprah. It now resides in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. This highlights his skill in capturing her spirit. The museum displays it as part of influential figures’ portraits.

The Oprah Winfrey Mural is more than art. It symbolizes Oprah’s enduring connection to Chicago. Her talk show ended in 2011. Yet, her presence remains. She shaped the West Loop’s identity. This mural immortalizes her influence for generations.

Take a moment to appreciate this artistic tribute. The Oprah Winfrey Mural celebrates a true icon. It marks her lasting legacy on Chicago’s vibrant landscape. It reminds us of her profound impact on the city.
