The Old Lace School Museum a charming one-room schoolhouse stands before you. This unassuming building holds a wealth of history. It’s more than just a museum. It’s a testament to the evolution of Darien Illinois.

The Old Lace School Museum wasn’t always a museum. It began as the first Lace School in the 1860s. Imagine children from the Lace community learning their ABCs within these very walls. The original school unfortunately burned down in 1924. The building you see today is the second Lace School. This replacement served as the only school in the area for many years.

After its days as a school the Old Lace School Museum had another role. In 1969 when Darien became a city this building became the city’s very first City Hall. It only served in that capacity for a year though. From 1970 to 1972 the building transitioned again this time serving as the Darien police station. This small building played a big part in the early days of Darien.

In 1976 the Darien Historical Society stepped in. They took over the Old Lace School Museum. The Society’s mission is to preserve and share the rich history of Darien. The Old Lace School Museum perfectly embodies this mission. It’s a place where the past comes alive. You can almost hear the echoes of children’s laughter and the whispers of history.

Today the Old Lace School Museum is open to the public. You can step inside and explore exhibits. You can learn about the lives of those who shaped Darien. It’s a place to connect with the community’s past. It’s a place to discover stories waiting to be uncovered. Take a moment to appreciate the Old Lace School Museum. It’s a captivating glimpse into Darien’s journey.
